Scammers Are Getting Instagram Accounts Suspended to Demand Ransom
If your Instagram account suddenly gets suspended for copyright violations you didn't commit, you may be looking at a new kind of extortion.
Scammers are filing false copyright complaints against Instagram accounts, getting them temporarily suspended, and then reaching out to the account owners. They claim they filed the complaint and offer to have it reversed if you pay them. It is a straightforward ransom scheme that exploits Instagram's automated suspension system and the panic of an account owner who just lost access.
How the scam works
The process starts when a scammer files a fake copyright claim against your account through Instagram's official reporting system. Instagram's automated tools often suspend accounts first and investigate later. Once your account is locked, you receive a notice explaining the suspension. That is when the scammer contacts you—usually through a message on another platform or email—claiming responsibility and offering a solution. Pay them a certain amount of money, they say, and they will withdraw the complaint and get your account restored.
You are now in a bind. Your account is gone. The scammer has artificially created a sense of urgency. You may not realize that filing a false copyright claim is itself illegal, and that paying them only funds further scams.
What to do if this happens to you
First, do not pay. Paying someone to remove a copyright claim they falsely filed only teaches them the tactic works. It also does not guarantee your account will be restored.
Instead, use Instagram's official appeals process. When you receive a suspension notice, Instagram provides a link to request a review or appeal. Use that channel. Explain that you did not violate copyright and ask Meta (Instagram's parent company) to investigate. This is the legitimate way to challenge a false claim.
If someone contacts you claiming they filed the complaint, report that message to Instagram and block the sender. Do not engage in conversation or negotiation.
If you want to be proactive, make sure your account is secure: use a strong, unique password, enable two-factor authentication, and review your login activity regularly. A compromised account is easier for scammers to exploit.
The good news is that Instagram's official appeals process works. Meta investigates false claims and restores accounts. It takes patience, but it costs you nothing and holds the scammer accountable instead of rewarding them.
