Expired Credit Cards Still Work: Here's Why

Researchers at Malwarebytes Labs uncovered a serious vulnerability in how Visa processes card payments. Scammers can manipulate the expiration date on expired credit cards, allowing them to make fraudulent purchases even after a card should no longer work.

This vulnerability, called a "Zombie Card" attack, exploits a gap in payment processing systems. When you use a credit card, the merchant's system checks several things: the card number is valid, you have funds available, and the card hasn't expired. But researchers found that some systems don't properly validate the expiration date, meaning a scammer can change it to a future date and the transaction goes through.

Why it matters: If your card information has been stolen or leaked in a data breach, expiration is no longer a reliable defense. A criminal with your card details can simply reset the expiration date and use your card for purchases you never made.

What to do: Contact your credit card company right away if you suspect your card details have been compromised. Request a replacement card with a new number. Check your statements regularly—most cards come with fraud protection, but you want to catch unauthorized charges quickly. If you see fraudulent transactions, report them to your bank immediately. Most credit card companies have zero-liability policies, meaning you won't be held responsible for charges you didn't authorize.

And if you've used your card online recently on unfamiliar websites, consider freezing your credit report with the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion).
